Friends of St Leonard’s
Friends of St Leonard’s was inaugurated in September 1984 to support the ancient church of St. Leonard, Bengeo. We now have 169 members.
- Friends of St Leonard’s was established to:
- Promote wider interest in the ancient church of St Leonard’s, Bengeo
- Assist the Parochial Church Council of Holy Trinity Church, Bengeo, in the continued preservation of St Leonard’s Church, and to
- Provide for the enrichment and continued use of St Leonard’s Church.
We are a group of volunteers working to keep St. Leonard’s church open and available as a centre for Christian worship and a place of peace for the people of our community. We have been entrusted with the care of the oldest building in Hertford, and over the years our fund-raising efforts have purchased a new organ, a portable keyboard, chairs for the church, the lighting and sound reinforcement systems, choir stands and hymn books, funded conservation work on the paintings of Moses and Aaron, as well as providing for the survey of the wall paintings and restoration of the funeral hatchments.
The Friends of St. Leonard’s have no formal constitutional link with the PCC. They seek to promote interest in the church and raise funds to keep it in good order, electing our own committee and controlling our own finances. However, in practice we work in harmony with the PCC and try to ensure that we always have a PCC member on the Friends committee.
